How bright does a 20 month old girl supposed to be and what do you buy them?
My little niece seems quite up to speed but I have no clue how 'complicated' conversation [if I may call it that] I can have with her!
The dad's a chemical engineer and the mom a surgeon - I mean hallo! Got the genes probably but I am lost here. Birthday one of these months, what do you buy?
P.S. I have no clue about kids so please be patient with me!
You can talk with your niece is any way you want to and she will learn and listen and get to know so much from everything you say. She may be very bright but at this point, you certainly know a lot more than she does!! The more you talk to her in real language, the more she will learn. You can speak to her with big words and ideas just as you would anyone else. Just take cues form her if she is no longer interested in what you have to say!! That will mean you are going over her head or that she has no need (in her mind) to pay attention to what you are talking about.
I can't stress enough that the best thing to buy her for presents are books. Toys come and go and long after, kids have books that they've loved for years. Chances are most kids are more interested in the boxes that the toys come in than they are interested in the actual toys, no matter what they are. I've heard it said that kids need two toys; sand and water. And that the two most important things a parent should do every day with their child is read to them and cook with them.
If she gets read to often, you will be absolutely amazed at how much she can learn and how quickly she can learn it. There are so many wonderful books for kids her age that it's hard to recommend some but, here is a stab at it. "Blueberries for Sal" is really good. "More, More, More said the Baby" is good. Sandra Boynton writes fun and sing-songy type books that my husband loves to read. "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" is good. Don't be afraid to get a book with more than a few words on a page. Once she gets used to being read to, she can listen and understand real stories and she will learn to love reading really early. "Little Bear" by Maurice Sendak is a wonderful set -- I think there are 3 or 4 of them. Rosemary Wells has several really good books -- some of her characters are 2 bunnies named Max and Ruby. You can also just wander around the kids' section of the bookstore and look for whatever you like or what you remember having enjoyed as a child. There is so much to choose from and so many of them are good. There are lots of fun counting and ABC books too.
Do not try to teach her while you are talking or reading to her. Just let her have fun with it. Let her ask questions and enjoy her relationship with you and what you have to offer.
